How meanwhile use can leave a lasting legacy
Writing for New London Architecture, our Communications and Impact Director, Matt Griffiths-Rimmer, reflects on how The LightHouse and Gardens in Stratford has grown through responding to local needs.
What began as a community garden and former marketing suite at our IQL North site now supports community events, food growing, wellbeing activities, local businesses and employment training. Residents who first arrived as visitors or volunteers have taken on paid roles running the space, while new partnerships continue to bring activity and opportunities to the site.
Matt explores the value of giving meanwhile uses time, support and flexibility to develop. He also considers how the relationships and conversations taking place today are informing IQL North’s future, where the consented development includes 8,700 sq ft of community space at a peppercorn rent.
